Hunter, John -- Sitting Eagle 1874-1970
Biographical or Historical Data:
Bill Moncur recalled in his memoirs and interviews that one of the Council of Seven Stones members he met in the 1920 to 1940 period on Turtle Mountain was "John the Hunter." This may or may not have been the same person known to Calgary AB residents as John Hunter/Sitting Eagle, a co-founder of the Calgary Stampede. The tenuous link between these two are : their contemporous history ; recollections of Sioux Valley elders that John Hunter was a cavalry sargeant who deserted to Montana rather than go overseas in World War II. Bill Moncur recalled a conversation with his John Hunter about the Calgary Stampede. Circumstantially, if the records and stories pertain to the same individual, then John Hunter was a part-Assiniboine (unknown other part) who was a reknowned horseman. He served in South Africa with the mounted rifles during the Boer War in the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles.
